Government AI Watch
The official White House Instagram posted this. No label. No disclosure.
This image was posted to the official White House Instagram account on April 29, 2026. It purports to show the Artemis II crew — Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen — meeting with President Trump in the Oval Office.
Whether this visit happened as depicted is not something that can be confirmed. What can be confirmed is that the photo itself shows two anomalies consistent with AI generation or AI alteration.

Look at Christina Koch’s right hand. The tip of her index finger is missing. It’s not obscured or in shadow. A complete fingertip does not disappear in an authentic photograph.

Now look at Trump's left hand. The shadow between his index and middle finger doesn't match the position of his own fingers — the index finger appears to be behind the middle finger, so it can't be casting a shadow onto it. And the middle finger itself is anatomically inaccurate.
These are not random distortions. Missing anatomical structure and lighting that contradicts the scene are documented failure modes of generative AI tools. They appear because the underlying technology does not understand anatomy or physics. It simply predicts pixels.
These hallmarks show up whether AI was used to alter a real photograph or to generate the entire image from scratch. The failure modes are identical. Without provenance metadata or a mandatory labeling requirement, there is no visual test that distinguishes one from the other.
The White House has a documented track record of posting AI-generated and AI-altered imagery without disclosure — including a digitally altered photo of a civil rights attorney arrested during an ICE protest, edited to make her appear to be crying.
Bottom Line: This image, posted by the official Instagram account of the White House of the United States, shows signs of AI manipulation. It was not labeled. No disclosure was made. And we have no way of knowing — visually or otherwise — what we are actually looking at.
